In the beginning, players will have a table containing 48 letters randomly placed without any rule. Some letters may appear more than once. From these letters, you have to arrange them into valid English words matching the given topic.

The number of words that you must find is 7. However, you can find more words in the game because only 7 related to the topic are counted as the correct answer.

You will make your guess by dragging a line connecting the potential letters. You can drag horizontally, vertically, or diagonally; as long as the letters included in your guessed word are not separated by an irrelevant letter, your guesses will be counted. Remember that the English word you guess must contain at least 3 letters; others are not acceptable.

If your guessed word is correct and it is one of the seven words belonging to the theme, it will be colored light blue. The game still counts your other precise English words formed from the letter table. Meanwhile, the ones not related to the topic will be colored gray and saved as a part of the buildup of hints in the game.

The Strands NYT game will automatically exclude your previously chosen English words and consider them as incorrect answers. For this reason, you can't re-guess a word once it is submitted to the game.

Even when you have solved all 7 secret words in the Strands game, there is still one final boss called the "spangram." It is a word that is regarded as the theme word, representing a meaning that all the other 7 words are about. In another saying, the theme given in advance of the game is a phrase, and the hidden spangram is a theme word.

The spangram can be guessed at any time during the game but not after you finish all 7 words. It will contain letters placed on both sides of the letter table. Hence, the spangram will always be a long word that stretches one of the four directions: top to bottom or vice versa, left to right or vice versa. This word will be colored yellow, which is different from the other seven hidden words in the game.

Then, the unrelated words will be used as a means to give you hints. You will get a hint from the game with every three correct word guesses you can make. The hint will let you see one of the seven hidden words in the game in the form of dashed outlined letters. However, the hint won't tell you how to drag the letters together to form a word.
